When One Day After Another Just Feels …Ordinary
Despite what Instagram tells us, most of our lives are not lived in dramatic moments. We see other families posed in matching clothes, in sparkling houses.
We look at them and think, “Their car probably doesn’t smell like french fries.”
We might even be that perfectly-matched family captured for a moment online. Meanwhile, the sofa is covered in laundry, and we can’t find a clean cup in the whole house.
The days are filled with meals, errands, appointments, laundry, and all the small tasks that somehow return almost as soon as they are finished. One day begins to look much like the one before it.
And after a while, it can begin to feel as though everyone else’s life has a story.
Ours just has a to-do list.
We begin to assume that meaningful lives look different from ours. More exciting. More polished. More memorable. More worthy of being framed and shared.
Over time, a quiet story begins to take shape — an ordinary life is insignificant. Nothing important is happening here. Real life is happening somewhere else.
Yet if we are honest, it is often the ordinary moments we cherish most.
The hands that steadied our bicycle.
The bedtime story where we felt safe.
The meal shared around a crowded table.
The friend who kept showing up.
The parent who was simply there.
The conversation we didn’t realize would become a memory.
When we look back, it is rarely the polished moments that carry the greatest weight. It is often the ordinary acts of love repeated over time.
Perhaps we have confused memorable with meaningful. We spend so much time looking for moments worth framing that we stop noticing the ones that are quietly shaping our lives.
Much of what gives a life meaning is not dramatic. It is built through presence. Through faithfulness. Through ordinary acts of love that rarely attract attention while they are happening.
The ordinary is not what happens while we wait for our real lives to begin. It is where much of life is actually lived.
If one day after another has begun to feel ordinary, perhaps it is worth looking more closely.
The meaning may not be absent.
We may simply have stopped seeing it.
A Prayer for Ordinary Days
God of the quiet hours,
Thank You for the ordinary days that make up so much of life.
Forgive me for the ways I overlook them. Forgive me for the ways I assume that significance always lives somewhere else.
Help me to see the people, responsibilities, and opportunities You have already placed before me. Help me to recognize the quiet ways love is being given and received in the midst of ordinary days.
When I am tempted to measure my life by excitement, achievement, or recognition, remind me that much of what matters most is built slowly. Help me notice the gifts hidden inside routines, the relationships woven through everyday moments, and the opportunities to love that often arrive disguised as ordinary responsibilities.
Teach me to be faithful in the life I have instead of longing for a different one. And remind me that a meaningful life is not built in a handful of dramatic moments, but in countless ordinary acts of love.
Amen.
