Knots: When You’re Going Through the Motions

If you are showing up to your life, your faith, your responsibilities, but feel as though you are moving on autopilot—doing what needs to be done without much feeling, energy, or inner engagement—I want to speak to you gently.

Going through the motions is not hypocrisy.

Sometimes it is survival.

Sometimes it is faith at its most stripped-down form: continuing even when emotion has gone quiet, when motivation has thinned, when joy feels distant.

There are seasons when the inner life goes dormant, not because it has died, but because it is conserving energy.

Like winter soil, resting beneath the surface.

God is not offended by your lack of enthusiasm. God is not waiting for you to feel more inspired before drawing near.

In fact, many saints have lived long stretches of faith marked by routine, repetition, and ordinary obedience. They prayed familiar prayers when words failed. They showed up even when nothing seemed to be happening. And God worked quietly within that steadiness.

If this is a hard season, you are not required to manufacture feeling. You are not required to force meaning out of every moment. Faith does not always feel alive; sometimes it simply is.

The motions you are going through may be holding you more than you realize.

God honors your persistence. God meets you in the mundane. God remains present even when you feel numb or detached.

You are allowed to rest inside the rhythm.
You are allowed to be honest about the flatness.
You are allowed to trust that this season is not the whole story.

Nothing is wasted—not even the quiet, ordinary days.

As St. Thomas More said, “The ordinary acts we practice every day at home are of more importance to the soul than their simplicity might suggest.”

A Prayer for When You’re Going Through the Motions

Faithful God,
You see me showing up when I feel empty.
You see the prayers spoken without feeling,
the obedience offered without enthusiasm.

Meet me in the ordinary.
Bless the small, quiet acts of faith
that feel insignificant but are not.

When I am numb, be steady.
When I feel disengaged, remain present.
Help me trust that even now, You are at work beneath the surface.

Amen.
